The Casio fx-9860G is a series of graphing calculators manufactured by Casio Computer Co., Ltd, successor of the fx-9750G PLUS/CFX-9850 PLUS/CFX-9950 PLUS/CFX-9970 family of calculators. All of them are capable of being programmed by means of sophisticated languages and tools including assembly language, Basic variants, and ports of programming languages such as C, as well as hosting add-ins which are compiled on a computer and then downloaded to the calculator. ^[1]

There are several versions of the fx-9860G; the standard fx-9860G, often referred to as the 'vanilla' flavor, and the SD, AU and Slim versions.

• The AU version used to limit the amount of internal flash memory available to 800 Kb to meet Australian school regulations, although it has now been upgraded to 1.5 MB.
• The SD variant comes with an SD expansion card slot, allowing read and write access up to 2 GB of memory on a SD memory card.
• The Slim version has a back-lit display, on-board help, and is designed as a clam-shell to minimize its size.

The usual fx-9860G and fx-9860G SD are marketed in France as Graph85 and Graph85 SD.

Programming[edit]

The calculators can be programmed in different ways. The fx-9860G's come with a built-in BASIC-like interpreter (Casio BASIC), allowing the user to create simple and complex programs using built-in functionality.

The other method is to create an add-in. Add-ins are binary programs, executing directly on the calculator's CPU. CASIO has released two official add-ins, GEOMETRY and PHYSIUM. An SDK was released by CASIO in 22/01/2007, allowing users to create their own add-ins, though no support is provided for this by CASIO. The add-ins and the SDK are available for registered users at CASIO's website.

Connectivity, and Programme Development[edit]

The calculator supports connecting to computer via USB cable. USB connectivity requires installation of USB driver and Program Link software (FA-124) from the bundled CD-ROM.

The 3-pin COM (serial) port supports transferring data between other CFX-9850/fx-7400 series calculator up to 9600 bit/s, and other fx-9860G series calculator up to 115,200 bit/s.

fx-9860GII, fx-9860GII SD[edit]

The fx-9860GII and fx-9860GII SD became available in May 2009. These calculators have backlit displays and the Geometry (in user mem) and ECON2 add-ins preinstalled. They also have new mathematical functions.^[2]

The French versions of the GII models are the Graph 75 and Graph 95.The Australian version of the GII is the fx-9860G AU PLUS.

fx-9860GIII[edit]

The fx-9860GIII became available in 2020. It has an updated design, but the screen is no longer backlit. It comes with Geometry and ECON3 add-ins, and built-in MicroPython.^[3]

I was playing around on Casio's Manager Plus free trial for the Prizm when I noticed some new functions. When exploring the memory management app I came across an option to import and export files from your computer. Curious as ever I took the latest build of Insight and sent it to the emulator. To my surprise it showed up on the main menu correctly and even more surprising it ran somewhat correctly. This is significant because it was previously believed that this emulator was of the OS only and not the actual hardware. There were a few discrepancies such as during the transparency test when a picture is supposed to be loaded and a few other minor glitches. One thing to note is that it is not a perfect emulation in that it is obvious that Casio modified the original OS to work for this emulator. Functions such as the battery are disabled. Most functions are around the same speed as the real Prizm with a few being faster such as screen drawing.
Issues that I did have with it was that multiple key presses are not supported which led the gif clip I took to end because I could not press the on button and 0 at the same time. Other things is that not being a full emulator means that we cannot upload new OS's the same way, but that could be possible via changing the data files. Interesting things that this provides us is a file called CPU73050.dll which contains the emulation code for the undocumented Super H CPU being used in the Prizm. It is essential now that we do are best to dissemble the code and document as much as we can. I do want to note that my Prizm emulator project Spectrum has not died as there is much to be improved upon, but it is not my top priority right now. This will though provide a good testing bed for the time being.
Steps to run emulator (No Prizm needed, but you do need a PC or wine)
1. Go to https://edu.casio.com/freetrial/download.php/fx-cgm_90d_1.00_2.zip and download Manager Plus
2. Install the Manager Plus free trial
3. Download the latest build of Insight provided at the bottom of this post courtesy of Simon Lothar
4. Run the Manager Plus
5. Using the arrow keys navigate to Memory app or just press alpha F
6. Press F3 to import and export files
7. Press F1 to import
8. Find Insight.g3a on the new explorer window and press OK
9. Press F1 to save
10. Press exit to exit (duh)
11. Press menu to return to the main menu
12. Find the Insight app then press EXE
